What Do Dogs Eat?

 

 

 

 

Let's start with the facts: Dogs are carnivores. They have sharp teeth for tearing meat, short digestive tracts to process protein quickly, and highly acidic stomachs to breakdown bacteria and bones. This means that they can easily process their natural diet which is known as whole prey. Over the years, as man's best friend they have evolved and learnt to tolerate carbohydrates and vegetables, but they do not require either element in their diet. 

 

 

 

 

What Is Raw Dog Food?

 

 

 

 

The most natural way to feed your dog is to replicate the whole prey diet with raw meat and bones in the ratio of 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% offal. Cotswold Raw offers three ranges: Butchers Block, an 80/10/10 with no added vegetables, herbs or supplements, suitable for dogs with yeast allergies or those needing to put on weight; 80/20 which consists of 80% meat, bone and offal, and 20% vegetables, suitable for most dogs; and 70/30 which has a little less meat, a little more vegetables and added joint aid, suitable for older or less active dogs needing to lose weight. The Butcher's Block and 70/30 ranges only come in 1kg tubs, but the 80/20 range is available in a variety of flavours, and both a 1kg and 500g tub. The 80/20 range comes in a variety of flavours, some of which are single protein, and they consist of 80% meat and offal, and 20% fruit and vegetables. The 60/40 range comes in a variety of mixed protein flavours with 60% meat and offal, and 40% vegetables and brown rice. Paleo Ridge is a fantastic brand offering an 80/10/10 Classic range following the prey model containing 80% human-grade outdoor-reared meat, 10% offal and 10% bone in a chunky mince. They also have a 80/20 Essentials range which consist of 80% high-welfare meat, bone and offal, supplemented with seasonal vegetables and extra virgin olive oil. The Classic range is in 1kg and Essentials in 500g, but both are in recyclable packaging which uses eco-friendly vegetable based inks.

Unique Raw follows the 80/10/10 approach to raw dog food with no added vegetables, herbs or supplements so that it is suitable for all dogs. Two recipes contain only 5% bone, while one recipe has 20% bone and one is bone free. There are a number of chicken-free options and all recipes contain 10% heart so that they are suitable for cats as well. All flavours come in a 1kg tub and some flavours are offered in a 500g tub.
